For me the creaminess is amazing, the aftertaste, the sweetness that jump out now and then. I nabbed an 8oz. Unfortunately, I had to rely on the kindness of a fellow briar brother for the experience. On more aged samples, the tin had an almost rotten sweetness to it. Upon lighting, your palate will quickly be washed in the full, rich flavor of the mixture. There is a bit of a moisture problem at this point, but it is quickly taken care of with a single pipe cleaner. The main differences I found between this and a quality English/ Balkan mixture is: Penzance isn't as sweet or as flavorful & doesn't pack much of a Vitamin N punch. A better approach might be stack ranking those that consistently sign up for alerts only to be disappointed by sold out, giving the rest of us a chance to purchase. I can safely say though that this blend is the first where I can really taste the varying flavours and the changes throughout the bowl - as a novice I thought I was missing something but it was just that I was not smoking the right tobaccos! I laid my half full pipe down, and went for another pipe and the other new (to me) brand that I had purchased. =========================================================. But the truth is, some of the blends made today by Esoterica, McClelland, Pease and a couple others are every bit as good as, or better than, anything available back in the day. It is something I would smoke on occasion I wish to have something entirely different. The blender expertly combined all of the ingredients necessary to please just about anyone. I was not disappointed; it is a terrifically satisfying smoke. This will become this generation's 759. The latakia/oriental crumble fusion has a depth of character completely unique and delicious. It is very consistent across tins - you can rely on it. The taste was a very married cool English flavor. I finally got a couple tins of Esoterica Penzance - one over-priced from an online tobacco scalper and one fairly-priced from an ebay pipe smoker. I like smoking flakes, and these fall apart before they can be pushed into the pipe. I'm sorry there are those who find it acceptable to hoard and sell for profit. Penzance is cool smoking, creamy, salty, pungent, sweet, and smoky. This is one of my favorites. I Have only got four stars to give it, But I believe it deserves one more. I have found two bits of information helpful when it comes to Penzance that will aid you in your smoking bliss. Balkan Sobranie If you're dying to taste a heavy shot of latakia, I'd recommend Penzance to you. They make it easy to load your pipe. I combined my favorite aromatic (Lane's BCA - Black Cavendish), with Penzance to the ratio of 5:1 (BCA:Penzance). I have tried so many blends.I am finding my self always coming back to penzance. There is always a bit of moisture buildup from the first third to half of the bowl, but this clears up after halfway. It's a very dry smoke for me, and this makes me suspicious that there is more than just tobacco in here. edit: this is still, by far, my favorite latakia. I would also put HU's Fayyum kake above this, but not by much. You need to find the right pipe, and the right pack, and stick with it religiously. I liked it so much that I went back and bought a 2-oz tin. To me, Penzance is the perfect blend. I want to enjoy this tobacco as many people have.I am not there yet. The taste was a bit underpowering at first, but finally began to coax its way forth after about one fourth of the bowl. But it's almost as good as it's reputation promises. Theres incence, creaminess, leather, just a bit of spice. Penzance was my first experience with latakia. I know there's some oriental or something floating around in there too. One other thing: I ordered this blend through the link on this page. The other is Special Latakia Flake with which I find that it shares the Virginia flavor but while Special Latakia is indeed Oriental (Turkish) forward this one in my mind is the true Oriental blend- Penzance is more about the Latakia. Although I rated this 4 stars, I do not mean to suggest it is exquisite leaf. These tobaccos (the hype tells us) are the biggest, badest, most overwhelming tobaccos of all time. However, with the idea that more is better I began my quest for what many believe to be the epitome of the Latakia blends and was quickly directed toward Penzance being described by many as the graile of Latakia. The grass isn't always greener and the rare is not always better than what is easy to get. The only drawback to this tobacco is perhaps that it is a little wet, and smokes a little hot as a result. Just get it out and enjoy the aroma MMMMM.. nice! I believe that this is my favorite full English blend from Esoterica. Lo-and-behold, there was an 8-oz. Unlike most Aromatics that lose 90% of their flavor 1/2 way down the bowl, I even enjoy the last 1/3 of the bowl as it changes flavors.
